Wood butter or wood conditioner is a combination of beeswax and mineral oil that is used to protect and maintain wooden kitchen utensils, butting boards, and bowls. It helps keep the wood hydrated which will prevent it from drying out and cracking.
The beeswax provides a protective layer across the surface of the board, whilst the food grad mineral oil nourishes the wood.
It is made by fist heating up the mineral oil (in our case we used a soup pot) and then once its reached the proper temperature we had the beeswax at an appropriate ratio for the intended use. For cutting boards, a four parts mineral oil to one part beeswax is recommended. The two are then stirred until translucent, and are then poured into containers to cure. After 24 hours, the butter is ready for application.
To apply the wood butter:
Insure that the board is completely clean
Take a paper towel or some other kind of rag, and scoop out some wood butter
Take the rag and apply the wood butter to the wooden surface in circular motions
Cover the entire board (you may need more then one scoop of wood butter)
Once the board is covered, let it rest for a few hours (recommended to wait overnight)
Once cured, wipe any excess off with a clean paper towel
Enjoy your revamped cutting board.
